Moving GeoCue Server to new hardware

1) Is it only the GeoCue Server Software being installed on the new hardware?

2) Is there a GeoCue Federator Server also being moved to the new hardware?

3) Is the plan to move and install the SQL Server on the new hardware?

4) Is the plan to move the location of the GeoCue Common folder to the new hardware?

5) Is the plan to move the location of the GeoCue Warehouse folder to the new hardware?

Installing the GeoCue Server Software only on new hardware

1) Stop the previous GeoCue Server Service

2) To install the GeoCue Software on the new hardware please refer to instructions in the GeoCue Installation Guide

3) Point the newly installed GeoCue Server to the SQL database

4) Request updated GeoCue Server Licenses:

a. After the GeoCue Server Software has been installed open Database Manager and go to the Licensing Tab

b. Copy the Server Code and send that information in an e-mail to support@geocue.com with information concerning the Server Migration

c. Apply the updated License File

5) Apply all and any needed Service Packs.

6) Configure the GeoCue Clients to connect to the new GeoCue Server. Additional information on this configuration can be found in the GeoCue Installation Guide.

Installing the GeoCue Federator Server Software on new hardware

1) Open the Federator Administrator and remove the GeoCue Servers

2) Stop the previous GeoCue Federator Server Service

3) Install the GeoCue Server Software on the new hardware, as above, if applicable.

4) To install the GeoCue Federator Software on the new hardware please refer to instructions in the GeoCue Installation Guide

5) Point the newly installed GeoCue Federator Server to the SQL database

6) Request updated GeoCue Federator Server Licenses:

a. After the GeoCue Federator Server Software has been installed open Database Manager and go to the Licensing Tab

b. Copy the Server Code and send that information in an e-mail to support@geocue.com with information concerning the Server Migration

c.  Apply the updated License File

7) Apply all and any needed Service Packs.

8) Configure any GeoCue Servers to connect to the new GeoCue Federator Server. Additional information on this configuration can be found in the GeoCue Installation Guide.

Moving and Installing SQL Server on new hardware

1) There are three options for SQL Server: MSDE, SQL Express or SQL Full

a. MSDE: install is available in the GeoCue Installation folder (Free – 2 GB database limit)

b. SQL Express: Latest version is available for download from – http://www.microsoft.com/express/database (Free – 10 GB database limit)

                        i.  Make sure to download the option that has Database w/Tools that contains the SQL Management Studio

c. SQL Full: Latest version is available for download from – http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/sqlserver/get-sql-server/how-to-buy.aspx (Paid version – no size limit on database)

2) Download and install the selected version of SQL

a. For additional installation information concerning MSDE and SQL Express please refer to the GeoCue Installation Guide

3) Add the user who will be logged into the GeoCue Server Service and GeoCue Federator Service (if applicable) to SQL as either a SYSADMIN or SERVERADMIN.

4) Ensure that xp_cmdshell is configured for the new SQL Server.

5) Make a copy of the current GeoCue Server and/or GeoCue Federator (if applicable) Database(s)

6) Attach these to the new SQL installation

7) Make the user who will be logged into the GeoCue Server Service and GeoCue Federator Service (if applicable) a DBO (database owner) for the GeoCue Server database and/or GeoCue Federator database

8) If also installing GeoCue Server on a new machine:

a. Install GeoCue Server and/or GeoCue Federator (if applicable) Software

b. Request and apply new licenses

c. Once the full installation has occurred and new licenses have been applied stop the previous version of GeoCue Server Service and/or GeoCue Federator Server Service and the SQL Service.

d. If there were any changes made to the database from step 4 make a new copy of the database

e. Attach the final copy of the database to SQL

f. If applicable, apply Service Packs

g. Configure GeoCue clients to point to the new GeoCue Server

9) If not moving the GeoCue Server:

a. Once you have the new SQL Server setup and ready stop the old SQL instance.

b. Open GeoCue Database Manager.

I. When it can’t find the instance of GeoCue to which it was pointed, it will error and give you the opportunity to point it to the new instance. The information is stored as a registry entry, HKLM\Software\GeoCue\GeoCue Server\ServerName, so you can modify the registry entry as well if you’d like. The value is formatted as “Database Server\Instance”.

c. If there were any changes made to the database from step 4 make a new copy of the database

d. Attach the final copy of the database to SQL

Moving the GeoCue Common Folder to new hardware

1) Create a new Common Folder on the new hardware and ensure that it has read/write permissions for all GeoCue Users and is a shared drive (additional information is available in the GeoCue Installation Guide)

2) Install the GeoCue Server Software

a. Install the coordinate systems on the new hardware in order to register the coordinate systems with the new hardware

3) Copy the previous Common Folder over to the new Common Folder on the new hardware. Coordinate systems in the new Common Folder can be overwritten at this point in time.

Moving the GeoCue Warehouse Folder to new hardware

1) Copy or perform a robust move of the previous Warehouse Folder to a location on the new hardware

2) Verify that the Warehouse Folder has read/write permissions for all GeoCue Users and is a shared drive (additional information is available in the GeoCue Installation Guide)

3) Install and configure GeoCue Server

4) Verify that the final database is in place and attached to the GeoCue Server

5) Run PathChanger.exe from the GeoCue Server Program Files folder to update the fields in the database to reflect the new warehouse location

a. PathChanger.exe is located on the server machine under: C:\Program Files\GeoCue\GeoCue Server

6) Add the new warehouse in GeoCue Database Manager

     a. Open Database Manager

     b. On the Warehouses tab, select Add

          i. Browse or paste in the new warehouse location.

          ii. Set as the default warehouse, if desired.

     e. Select the old warehouse and select Remove, if desired.
